A24 has finally set the new release date for David Lowery’s upcoming medieval fantasy film The Green Knight after it was pulled from the studio’s theatrical release schedule earlier this year. Originally scheduled for a May 2020 release and SXSW debut, the Dev Patel-led film has now been pushed back to hit the theaters on Friday, July 30, 2021.
An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger. From visionary filmmaker David Lowery comes a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from the knights of the round table.
The film stars Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire, Lion), Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Danish Girl), Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby, The King), Sarita Choudhury (Lady in the Water), Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible – Fallout), Kate Dickie (Game of Thrones), Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk, The Eternals) and Ralph Ineson (Game of Thrones).
The film is directed and written by David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, The Old Man & the Gun) from a story based on the poem of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. The story was already adapted into film twice before by Stephen Weeks, the first of which starred Nigel Green (Jason and the Argonauts) as the Green Knight and the second of which starred Sean Connery (From Russia With Love) as the titular knight.
Lowery will be producing the project alongside Toby Halbrooks (Pete’s Dragon) and James M. Johnston (A Ghost Story) through their Sailor Bear banner. Tim Headington and Theresa Steele Page are also producing on behalf of Ley Line Entertainment. Bron’s Aaron L. Gilbert and Creative Wealth Media’s Jason Cloth are executive producing. [Source]
A24’s highly anticipated The Green Knight was set to rise on May 29th, but has finally lost the battle to the ongoing pandemic. There is no new date as of this writing.
“From visionary filmmaker David Lowery comes a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from the knights of the round table,” A24 explained of their new movie, which may not be horror, per se, but looks to carry a level of dread, violence and darkness that should make it a hit with the horror crowd.

“The Green Knight,” a medieval fantasy adventure starring Dev Patel as King Arthur’s plucky nephew Gawain, will host its world premiere at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival. The movie, which will be distributed by A24, is directed by David Lowery.
The festival announced the new addition to its lineup as fears about the spread of the coronavirus continues to restrict travel around the world. Despite a petition signed by 15,000 people to cancel this year’s SXSW, the festival showcasing movies, music and technology is still scheduled to take place as planned in Austin, Texas.
This edition of SXSW will run from March 13 to 22, with the opening night film previously announced to be Judd Apatow’s “The King of Staten Island,” starring Pete Davidson. Other movies debuting at the festival include “The Lovebirds,” headlined by Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, and “Bad Trip,” an ensemble comedy with Tiffany Haddish.
“The Green Knight” will screen at SXSW on March 16 before releasing in North American theaters on May 29. The movie, which co-stars Alicia Vikander and Joel Edgerton, chronicles Gawain’s attempts to find the emerald-colored figure in the title.
Lowery previously came to SXSW in 2009, with his first feature movie “St. Nick.” He’s since gone on to direct both box office hits (2016’s “Pete’s Dragon”) and indie darlings (2018’s “Ghost Story”).
“We are thrilled to world premiere ‘The Green Knight’ at SXSW,” said Janet Pierson, the film festival’s director. “David Lowery is a singular artist with a filmmaking vision that’s both epic and intimate. It’s been beyond exciting to watch his growth as an artist. His newest film is an extraordinary achievement, delivering superlative performances, suspense, and magic with cinematic grandeur which we know our SXSW audience will love.” [Source]
