Alicia Vikander To Star In TV Adaptation Of Olivier Assayas’ Feature Film ‘Irma Vep’ For HBO

HBO has ordered a limited series based on Olivier Assayas’ 1996 feature film Irma Vep, with Alicia Vikander on board to star and exec produce.

Vikander, who won the Oscar for best supporting actress for The Danish Girl, will play Mira, an American movie star disillusioned by her career and a recent breakup, who moves to France to star as Irma Vep in a remake of the French silent film classic Les Vampires.

The series, loosely based on the film, will be written and directed by Assayas, who revealed he was working on the adaptation back in May. It will be produced by the team behind HBO’s Euphoria: A24, Sam Levinson and Kevin Turen.

Feature film Irma Vep starred Maggie Cheung as herself and Jean-Pierre Leaud as the middle-aged French film director. It screened in the Un Certain Regard section of the 1996 Cannes Film Festival.

The series, which is set against the backdrop of a lurid crime thriller, follows Vikander’s Mira who struggles as the distinctions between herself and the character she plays begin to blur and merge. It is exec produced by Assayas, Vikander, Sylvie Barthet, Levinson, Ashley Levinson, Turen through Little Lamb, and Stuart Manashil.

Irma Vep is the latest limited series that has the Ex Machina star Vikander attached. She is also developing a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Dial M For Murder with MGM/UA Television.

“When the opportunity arose to partner with Alicia and Olivier we jumped at the chance,” said Francesca Orsi, EVP HBO Programming. “Olivier is a master at weaving unique narratives imbued with levity and drama and Alicia is one of the most versatile, celebrated actors of our time. They have an undeniable, distinct vision for the reimagining of Olivier’s cult classic film, and we can’t wait to tell it with them.” Continue reading  »

‘Dial M For Murder’ Limited Series With Alicia Vikander Producing & Possibly Starring

MGM/UA Television is developing limited series Dial M For Murder, based on the 1952 play of the same name by Frederick Knott, which was adapted into the 1954 Alfred Hitchcock movie.

Oscar winner Alicia Vikander is executive producing through her Vikarious Film banner with an eye to potentially star in the series, which reimagines the classic suspense thriller story from the female perspective. In Hitchcock’s film, the role was played by Grace Kelly.

Michael Mitnick (The Giver) is creating and writing the series with Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter overseeing. Mitnick is a playwright-screenwriter whose sole previous TV series writing credit was on HBO’s Vinyl, co-created and executive produced by Winter.

Winter executive produces alongside Vikander and Charles Collier via Vikarious Film. Andrew Mittman of 1.21, who has a deal at MGM/UA TV, and Lloyd Braun will also serve as executive producers.

Dial M For Murder is being developed as an anthology series with potential follow-up installments in the suspense thriller genre from a similarly female point of view.

The original Dial M For Murder centers on a retired tennis champion (played in the movie by Ray Milland, who discovers that his wife (Kelly) has had an affair and hires an acquaintance to murder her. When the plan backfires and the wife kills her assassin, her husband frames her for the man’s murder, with his elaborate plot only uncovered with the help of his wife’s lover hours before she was to be executed after being sentenced to death.

Like Kelly, Vikander is an Oscar winner; she landed the award for The Danish Girl. Additionally, Vikander has earned two Golden Globe nominations to date, for Danish Girl and Ex Machina. She also is known for playing Lara Croft in the recent Tomb Raider reboot. [Source]

Justin Chon, Alicia Vikander Plus More Star In ‘Blue Bayou’ Drama From Chon, MACRO & eOne

Justin Chon is continuing to champion Asian narratives with his lastest project Blue Bayou, which is being co-financed by Charles D. King ‘s MACRO and Entertainment One. Chon will also star in the film alongside Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl, Tomb Raider), Mark O’Brien (Ready or Not, Halt and Catch Fire), Linh Dan Pham (Mr. Nobody, Ninja Assassin), and Emory Cohen (The OA, The Loudest Voice).

The pic marks the third Asian familial-centric drama from the Twilight Saga actor, who found success with his last two films, Gook and Ms. Purple, with the latter performing solidly at the box office when it opened in Los Angeles earlier this year. Blue Bayou was written by Chon, who will also direct the piece as production will commence this month.

Inspired by true events, the plot tells the story of Antonio, a Korean adoptee raised in the US who is forced to confront his distant past, and what it means for his own future as well as his family’s, as he suddenly –and unexpectedly– faces deportation.

Chon is producing the pic with MACRO’s King, Kim Roth, and Poppy Hanks. Clara Wu, Entertainment One’s Nick Meyer, Zev Foreman, and Eddie Rubin will serve as executive producers with MACRO’s Yira Vilaro and Greta Fuentes as co-producers.

Speaking with Deadline at this year’s Sundance fest, where Ms. Purple had its premiere, Chon talked about his transition to directing.

“The reason I stepped behind the camera is to take control of the story, number one,” said Chon. “Number two, I realize how I add the value to the Asian American community right now. We have Justin Lin, we have James Wan, and John Chu —they’re doing that space incredibly well. They’re doing the studio system so and more commercial traditional films. I think I’m so well served in telling these much more intimate stories that bring empathy to us, to our community, and portray us in an authentic way — and I think that is penetrating the culture in a different way.” Continue reading  »

Alicia Vikander Joins Toronto-Bound Documentary ‘Anthropocene’ As Narrator

Tomb Raider and The Danish Girl star Alicia Vikander has lent her voice to big-canvas documentary Anthropocene: The Human Epoch, which will get its world premiere this week at the Toronto Film Festival.

The science-themed doc, from filmmakers Jennifer Baichwal and Nicholas de Pencier and photographer Edward Burtynsky, contends that human impact on the planet means we have entered a new geological era.

The Toronto-based trio travelled to six of seven continents and 20 countries (the project was entirely carbon offset), documenting evidence of human domination, from concrete seawalls that cover 60% of China’s mainland coast to potash mines in Russia’s Ural Mountains, and marble quarries in Italy to surreal phosphate tailings ponds in Florida.

The film is in English, Russian, Italian, German, Mandarin and Cantonese with English subtitles. Pic is being released in Canada by Mongrel Media. Seville International is handling international sales.

“Alicia’s exceptional voice, and her considerable talent in knowing how to use it, has elevated our film enormously and brings a beauty and hope to the narration that is crucial. We are deeply honored by her participation,” Baichwal said.

The film is part of The Anthropocene Project, which also includes exhibitions, VR and books. It is the third in a trilogy of films that also include Manufactured Landscapes and Watermark.

Vikander recently wrapped shooting on the Wash Westmoreland thriller Earthquake Bird. [Source]

Alicia Vikander to Lead Voice Cast of ‘Moomins and the Winter Wonderland’

Academy Award-winning Swedish actress Alicia Vikander is set to lead the voice cast of upcoming stop-motion animation film Moomins and the Winter Wonderland, set for global release in December.

“Growing up, Moomins was my favorite childhood book, and now I can be part of the Moomins family,” Vikander said in a statement. “I’ll be playing both the roles of Little My and Sorry-oo. I am so excited to be part of the Moomins feature Moomins and the Winter Wonderland.”

Stellan Skarsgard also has joined the cast as the voice of Moominpapa and will executive produce.

The Moomins were created by the Finnish writer Tove Jansson in a series of books and comic strips, originally published in Swedish in the 1940s. The iconic fairy tale characters — a carefree family of white, roundish creatures with large snouts that make them resemble lovable hippopotamuses — are a staple of kids culture around the world, thanks to translations of the original books and comic strips, along with television and film adaptations, and even a theme park called Moomin World in Naantali, Finland.

Finish film company Filmkompaniet and Polish animation studio Animoon are co-producing the new project. Los Angeles-based production, distribution and IP management company Global Genesis Group is handling international distribution and sales.

Based on Jansson’s original books, with a screenplay from Małgorzata Więckowicz-Zyla, Piotr Szczepanowicz and Ira Carpelan, Moomins and the Winter Wonderland will be created from existing, vintage footage from original stop-motion Moomins productions co-produced by Jupiter Film and Film Polski in the 1980s.
